Our Country Home in Mono, Ontario

Two years ago, we decided to buy some property in Mono, Ontario to build a country home. This is the illustrated story of that project - and especially, of the end result.

The first issue was clearing the small plot of land for the building envelope. Not simple at all as there was little flat land and no visibility in the woods - but it worked out perfectly, with the house and its large windows facing north-east:

We decided to go for superior basement construction using Nudura. This consists of polystyrene blocks which are then filled with concrete: you get easy construction and immediate insulation (no cold walls). Then blueskin is wrapped around the wall for extra moisture protection.

Then frame on top of the basement, with an expensive engineered wood floor construction:
