China

I visited mainland China for the first time in 1999, during a week long visit to Shanghai.

China China was a revelation. Shanghai is a mixture of modern city (more tall skyscrapers than anywhere else), history (the Bund, for instance - and ancient Chinese history) and anachronisms like the revolution.

Shanghai is of course the most open town in China. The people are friendly, food is good, and there's millions of people waiting to start contributing to the economy. Even though the average income is low according to western standards, the number of PCs I see is as high as it is elsewhere.
