Hongkong

I have been working on and off in Hong Kong since 1985. In 2000, I spent much of the year there.

Hong Kong, 1987 Hongkong is dynamic and proof of the fact that free trade works. Of course Hong Kong is now China, but it is still Hong Kong. Quality, speed, hustle and bustle, and money on the one hand and dumb bureaucracy and monopolies on the other hand. And excellent food and brand names galor: no chance that your Rolex will not be recognised there.

One thing I regret: Kai Tak airport, where I learned to fly, has disappeared forever. I took this aerial picture myself, in 1985, from Cessna VR-HHN: I did a lot of flying in Hongkong (including my first solo, in a C152). Landing at Kai Tak, even with a small aircraft, was quite spectacular. I am very sorry it is now history.
